Fall is officially upon us and even though our fall activities may look a little different this year, it’s still fun to dress in the latest trends! Between the triumphant return of the poncho and the abundance of leather, there’s much to look forward to, fashionably-speaking, this fall.
These are 10 hot fashion trends to note this season for date nights, gatherings with the girls, or work!
Theeeeey’re back! Popular in the early 2000s, the poncho has returned as a popular look for Fall 2020. On display across several runways, there’s a style to suit everyone: cozy knit, wool, and even velvet renditions. These great layering pieces come in a variety of lengths and styles adorning fringe and other interesting details.
Forget the Moto jacket—this season we’re seeing leather from head to toe. The easiest (and most chic) way to pull off the look: a leather trench coat! Long leather coats were also a street style favorite during New York Fashion Week, often paired with denim and high boots for an edgy look. But there’s plenty of subtler options such as jeggings, faux leather jeans, skirts, and even tops! I know I always feel a touch more fashionable when I’m sporting a bit of leather!
3. Animal Prints
Animal prints are running wild these days in patterns that range from cheetah to leopard to python. Neutral and vivid animal prints are both on-trend for fall. If you’re not down for full-on cheetah, you might opt for an animal print accessory such as a shoe or belt to embrace this trendy look for fall.
4. Babydoll Dresses
Shift dresses have been popular for some time as they look flattering on most body types and can hide imperfections while still offering a hip, stylish look. The babydoll dress is loose-fitting with an empire waist that hits above the knee in length. This trend often incorporates a large ruffle accent on the bottom that is feminine and soft. Booties and high boots coordinate well with this sweet fashion trend.
5. Cropped Everything!
T-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweaters just keep getting shorter! Now we’re also seeing cropped blazers and jackets. The cropped look can be fashionable if paired with a high-waisted pant or skirt. If you dig this look, seek out cropped knitwear such as cardigans and other winter tops to capture this hot trend this season.
6. Modern Cutouts
Designers elevated the popular cutout in everything from formal wear to T-shirts this fall. Tasteful slits and contemporary cutouts were revealed as the new way to wear this look. This sexy trend is incorporated into elevated tops and dresses for nights on the town. But pieces with more subtle openings – like at the elbow (as worn by Victoria Beckham) – make it work for casual occasions and in some cases, office wear.
This fun look took center stage on the runway this season. Instead of being designed solely for the Boho crowd, we’re seeing fringe in all lengths as an accent on jackets, sweaters, office skirts, and other apparel. Even celebs like Rihanna and Beyonce have backed this fun fall trend in 2020!
8. Relaxed Business Casual
Although business casual was already prevalent throughout corporate America, the pandemic has put this trend on fast forward as working from home has become the norm. Busy professionals, some also juggling homeschooling responsibilities, demand comfortable yet chic attire in which they can do virtual calls and then quickly transition to an errand or childcare pick-up without changing. As such, joggers in all fabrics, textures, and styles are a fan favorite because they can be easily elevated or made to look more casual depending on the accessories.
If you have to dress more formally for work, the skirt suit is making a comeback on the New York runways. Will it gain momentum in Pittsburgh? That is yet to be seen.
Now Let’s Talk Shoes
9. Slouchy Boots
Meghan Markle sported a pair of slouchy designer boots last fall, and other designers may have followed suit because there was a multitude of colors and prints on the fall 2020 runways. You can pair these versatile boots with anything from midi skirts to skinny jeans.
Booties are hot on the fall scene in a variety of looks and patterns. There are so many styles to choose from: pointed toe or rounded toe, tall shaft or short shaft, leather or suede, snakeskin or python. The options are endless! A great bootie to consider is the mid-shaft, tight ankle bootie which can be paired with leggings, skirts, or dresses. You can also wear them with cropped or cuffed jeans. These shoes are so versatile and should be considered a closet staple!
No matter what you have in store this fall, the fashion industry has served up many diverse choices for you to embrace this season. As I always say, “Dress well to feel good even when no one is watching. Because when you look good, you feel your best.”
