Pittsburgh Passport: Victory Float Lounge

Pittsburgh Passport is your guide to discovering the unexpected in your own backyard. In each installment, I’ll step into a new space, trying firsthand what makes it special, and bringing you along for the journey. For the first stop on this adventure, I ventured into Victory Float Lounge in Lawrenceville.

As I approached Victory Float Lounge in  Lawrenceville,  the unassuming brick exterior hid the tranquility within. The anticipation of experiencing floatation therapy—a practice both ancient in concept yet modern in execution—filled me with a blend of curiosity and excitement.

Upon entering, I was greeted by a serene ambiance. Soft lighting bathed the minimalist decor and the addition of natural elements like live plants and beautiful wooden accents instantly inducing a sense of calm. The staff welcomed me warmly, their demeanor reflecting the lounge’s ethos of relaxation and rejuvenation.

After a brief check-in process, I was introduced to the concept of floatation therapy. The staff member explained that each float suite (measuring 6’5’’ by 7’ and 7’ tall—large enough to stand in!) provides ample space even for those who might feel claustrophobic in traditional tanks. The water, a mere 12 inches deep, is saturated with 1,500 pounds of Epsom salt, creating a buoyancy that allows one to float effortlessly, akin to the sensation of the Dead Sea.

Before beginning the session, I was guided to a private room equipped with a shower to wash off any impurities like lotions and body oils. The lounge thoughtfully provided essentials such as towels, earplugs, and makeup remover.

When booking, I had been advised to avoid caffeine prior to the session to enhance relaxation and to cover any minor cuts with their provided ointment, as the high salinity could cause discomfort. They also advised eating a light meal and hydrating one to two hours before hand.

Stepping into the float suite, I was struck by its spaciousness. The design allowed for complete control over the environment; I could choose to float in complete darkness and silence for full sensory deprivation or opt for ambient lighting and soothing music. I decided to start with the gentle starry sky lighting and soft melodies to ease into the experience.

As I reclined into the water, the buoyancy was immediately noticeable. The sensation of weightlessness, combined with the skin-temperature water, blurred the boundaries between my body and the environment. Minutes passed, and a deep sense of relaxation washed over me. The usual chatter of my mind quieted, replaced by a tranquil stillness.

Midway through the session, I chose to turn off the lights and music, embracing full sensory deprivation. In this state, time seemed to dissolve. I felt a profound connection to myself, a meditative state that truly must be experienced to be understood.

After the 60-minute session concluded, gentle music played, signaling the end of the float. I emerged from the suite feeling completely rejuvenated. A post-float shower washed away the saline residue, and I took a moment in the lounge area to savor the lingering tranquility.

Reflecting on the experience, I understood why many find floatation therapy beneficial for stress reduction, muscle relaxation, and mental clarity. The combination of sensory deprivation and weightlessness offers a unique avenue to disconnect from external stimuli and reconnect with oneself.

Victory Float Lounge extends beyond floatation therapy. They also offer infrared sauna sessions, which provide deep, penetrating heat to soothe muscles and promote detoxification. For those seeking a refreshing contrast, the cold plunge offers invigorating immersion, stimulating circulation and revitalizing the senses.

My visit to Victory Float Lounge was more than just a spa day; it was a journey into relaxation and self-discovery. The meticulous attention to detail, the serene environment, and the transformative float experience make it a haven for anyone seeking respite from the demands of daily life.

Victory Float Lounge has two locations: 3345 Penn Ave,Pittsburgh and 432 Green Street, Sewickley. floatvictory.com
